Senate Confirms Transportation Secretary

His agenda includes rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure.

Pete Buttigieg, a 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, has been confirmed by the Senate to be Transportation Secretary. He is a Harvard graduate, a Rhodes scholar, and a veteran of the war in Afghanistan.

Praised by the president as bringing a “new voice” to the administration, he has pledged to get to work quickly promoting safety and restoring trust in America’s transportation networks such as airlines, buses, city subway systems, and Amtrak.  He has also been charged by the president with rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure and fighting climate change.

“We need to build our economy back, better than ever, and the Department of Transportation can play a central role in this,” Buttigieg told his confirmation hearing last week.

His nomination drew bipartisan support with an 86-13 vote from the Senate.
